Abstract: With aging, there is evidence that many of the age-associated changes in strength and flexibility, related to muscle function and metabolism, are caused by lifestyle changes secondary to aging, with physical inactivity being the main one. Increasing age is accompanied by changes in the neuromuscular system, with a decrease in the performance of muscle strength, balance, joint mobility and cardiovascular fitness, influencing the dynamics of the locomotor apparatus and the performance of activities of daily living. This article discusses physical activity and its implications for aging based on a literature review. It was observed that, in relation to fascia, aging tends to lead to changes related to the densification of the extracellular and intramuscular matrix, which imply an increase in muscle stiffness and compliance of the elasticity of the fibrous fascial tissue, acting in the loss of muscle strength and decreased range of motion. It was concluded that aging is a progressive process of changes unfavorable to collagenous connective tissues, and participation in stretching training programs shows relative improvements in flexibility, while sedentary lifestyle exacerbates the effects of degradation of fascial connective tissue interconnections, increased stiffness and decreased collagen compliance.
